APAMA INVADE CLEVELAND - ¡otra vez!

En un post anterior os mostré el video sobre el montaje con ilustraciones del primer número de APAMA en un edificio del 811 de Prospect Avenue, en Cleveland (Ohio). Lamentablemente desde junio del año pasado ese edificio cambió de dueño y el montaje fue desmantelado.
No obstante desde hace una semana hay una nueva instalación en las calles de Cleveland. Es considerablememte más pequeña pero está en una calle mucho más transitada.
La primera instalación duró casi 8 meses y fue admirada por un montón de gente. Esperemos que la nueva atraiga a muchos más hacia nuestro personaje.

APAMA INVADES CLEVELAND - again!
In a previous post I shared a video about the installation with artwork from the first issue of APAMA in a building at 811 Prospect Avenue, in Cleveland (Ohio). Sadly since last June the building has a new proprietor and the installation is gone.
However there's a new installation now in the streets of Cleveland. It's considerably smaller, but on a much busier street.

The big one was up for almost 8 months, and a lot of people really dug it. Hopefully the new one will bring more folks in to our kick ass comic.

Boceto a lápiz (muy detallado, sí) para un nuevo encargo basado en el personaje GI Joe. Me he tomado la licencia de emplazar las pirámides en una ubicación en la que no se encuentran en la realidad para añadir un elemento icónico muy reconocible. Además, la línea del horizonte sugiere una altura mucho mayor de la que en realidad tiene la esfinge. Se trata de acentuar el dramatismo de la escena.

Very tight pencilled sketch for a new commission based on the character GI Joe. I have taken some artistic license: actually the pyramids are not located in that place but I wanted to add a very recognizable icon. Also, the line of the horizon suggests that the sphinx is much more taller than what is in reality. This was made to accentuate the drama.

El número 2 de APAMA The Undiscovered Animal está a punto de publicarse. Ted Sikora, colorista y co-guionista de la serie está terminando de colorear las páginas y probablemente a finales de este mes estará ya disponible online y totalmente gratis, al igual que el primer número. Os adelanto un pequeño aperitivo de 2 páginas.

The second issue of APAMA The Undiscovered Animal is about to being published. Ted Sikora, colourist and co-writer is finishing coloring the pages and probably by the end of this month the comic will be available online totally free, like the first issue. I'm presenting a small sneakpeek of two pages.

Finalmente he decidido colorear la ilustración directamente sobre los lápices ahorrándome el pasado a tinta. Principalmente porque la idea es que tenga un acabado pictórico donde la línea del dibujo va a desaparecer prácticamente por completo.

Finally I have decided to color the illustration directly over the pencils saving myself the inking. Mainly because the idea is that it has a finished pictorial aspect where the line of the drawing is going to disappear practically completely.

En 1932 dos tipos de Cleveland, Jerry Siegel y Joe Shuster crearon el primer luchador contra el crimen dotado de superpoderes: Superman. Durante años se han creado miles de personajes en el género pero casi ninguno ha tenido a Cleveland como hogar. Ahora dos viejos amigos y cineastas, Ted Sikora y Milo Miller co-escriben y producen una nueva serie de cómics titulada “Apama – The Undiscovered Animal” cuyas aventuras transcurren en la ciudad de Cleveland.

Apama hizo su debut en el ComicCon de San Diego, como personaje de la película independiente “Hero Tomorrow” que ha sido acogida con gran éxito en festivales de cine internacional, proyectándose en festivales de todas partes del mundo desde Nueva York a Montreal, Roma, Brasil y Australia.

En la película basada en Cleveland, David es un aspirante a dibujante de cómics que se esfuerza por vender a editoras de cómic su idea original de un superhéroe llamado Apama. Su novia, diseñadora de moda en ciernes, le confecciona un traje de Apama para Halloween. Cuando la vida de David se va al traste, decide emprender varias desventuras en la vida real ¡disfrazado como su propio superhéroe! – una premisa similar a la del film Kick-Ass que Miller & Sikora ya habían imaginado ¡tres años antes!

El cómic “Apama: The Undiscovered Animal” supone realizar la idea que David habría creado si hubiera tenido éxito en su carrera como autor de cómics.

¿Pero entonces, qué es un Apama? Con tantos grandes superhéroes basados en criaturas de la naturaleza (Spiderman, Batman, Wolverine) los creadores se preguntaron, ¿Y si existiera una criatura que fuera tan potente y cautelosa que todavía no ha sido descubierto por el hombre moderno? Esa criatura es el Apama. En el cómic, Ilyia Zjarsky, un conductor de origen húngaro de un camión de helados, va de excursión un día al bosque y encuentra un antiguo pergamino indígena que revela la clave que permite que un humano posea el espíritu del Apama. Dice Sikora, “Esto no es sólo una adaptación de una película, Milo y yo teníamos claro que realmente teníamos algo nuevo que contar en el género. Esta serie cuenta su propia historia independientemente de que se conozca o no nuestra película.”

Cuando el equipo decidió convertir esto en un cómic, publicaron un anuncio solicitando un ilustrador en el sitio Web ConceptArt.org. “Para nuestra sorpresa, más de 100 artistas de todo el mundo respondieron para solicitar el puesto. Fue difícil seleccionar entre todos los candidatos, pero al final el español Benito Gallego fue nuestra opción definitiva.”

“El arte de Benito nos recordó al tipo de cómics clásico de los años 70 con el que crecimos y que tanto queremos,” dice Sikora. “Muchos artistas son capaces de dibujar bonitas viñetas y personajes, pero la manera en que Benito diseña sus páginas es capaz de contar historias tan visualmente hermosas que algunas páginas no necesitan ni siquiera diálogos –lo cual es una rara cualidad. Dibuja hermosas mujeres intrigantes, hombres cotidianos de duro aspecto, y hace un maravilloso trabajo con la arquitectura. También ha dibujado en el pasado muchos cómics que tenían como temática animales y bestias, así que se convirtió en el candidato idóneo.”

Para mi, Apama supone un acercamiento muy maduro al género de los superhéroes, va de la comedia al horror pasando por el romance. Hay referencias al conocimiento espiritual, a la cultura, la religión y la mitología de los pueblos nativos americanos.

Para ayudarme a reflejar el Cleveland auténtico, Sikora fue por todas partes de la ciudad, fotografiando diferentes lugares para crear la sensación correcta. “Era como localizar de nuevo exteriores para nuestra película. También conseguí permiso para mostrar escaparates reales y bloques de pisos.”

El primer número de "Apama" está ya disponible gratis (de momento sólo en inglés pero pronto aparecerá la versión en castellano) para descargar en el sitio Web de la película (www.herotomorrow.com); se espera que el cómic se publique trimestralmente, con camisetas y carteles del personaje Apama que estarán también pronto disponibles.

El DVD de la película “Hero Tomorrow,” que tiene más de cuatro horas de material, está actualmente a la venta en el sitio Web de la película, en Amazon.com, y en iTunes.

Back in 1932 two guys from Cleveland Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the world's first super powered crimefighter, Super-Man. Over the years thousands of characters have been created in the genre but almost none have ever called Cleveland home. Now longtime friends and filmmakers Ted Sikora and Milo Miller have co-written and produced a new comic book series entitled "Apama - The Undiscovered Animal" whose adventures take place all over Cleveland.

Apama made his debut at San Diego's Comic Con International, in the independent film "Hero Tomorrow" which has been an international film festival sensation, screening at festivals everywhere from New York to Montreal, Rome, Brazil and Australia.

In the Cleveland based film, David is a struggling comic book artist who can't sell his original superhero idea, Apama, to a publisher. His girlfriend, being an aspiring costume designer, makes him a costume of Apama for Halloween. Once David's life goes to pot, he decides to embark on various misadventures in real life dressed up as his own superhero.

The comic book "Apama: The Undiscovered Animal" is a realization of David's dream that imagines what David would have created had he succeeded in his comic book creating career.

So what is an Apama? With so many great super-heroes based on creatures from nature (Spider-Man, Bat-Man, Wolverine) the creators asked themselves, "What if there was another creature that was so powerful and stealth that is was still undiscovered by modern man?" That creature is the Apama. In the comic book, Hungarian ice cream truck driver Ilyia Zjarsky goes hiking one day and finds the ancient Native American scroll that reveals the key to enabling the Apama's spirit in a human. Says Sikora, "This isn�t just some adaptation of a movie � Milo and I felt that we truly had something new to say in the genre. This book will stand on its own two feet without any knowledge of our film."

When the team decided to make this into a comic book they put an ad out for an illustrator on the website ConceptArt.org. "To our shock over 100 artists from all over the world applied for the project. It was tough to narrow it down, but Spaniard Benito Gallego was our ultimate choice."

"Benito's art reminded us of the classic '70s comic book style we all grew up loving." says Sikora. "His panel layouts give the story a very seamless flow - a very rare quality. He draws beautiful females, and does wonderful work with architecture. In the past he had done quite a bit of animal-monster themed comic art, so he was the perfect fit."

For me Apama is a very mature approach to the superhero genre. It goes from comedy to horror passing through romance. There are references to spiritual knowledge, ethnicities, culture, religion, and mythology.

To help me capture authentic Cleveland, Sikora went all over town, photographing various locations to create the right feel. "It was just like scouting for our film all over again. I actually got permission to show some actual storefronts and apartment buildings as well."

The first issue of "Apama" is available for free downloading on the film's website (www.herotomorrow.com) The comic is expected to publish on a quarterly basis, and is intended for mature audiences.

The DVD for Hero Tomorrow, which has over four hours of material, is currently available for purchase on the film's website and iTunes.

Cuarto (y definitivo) boceto a lápiz. Ted me pidió que cambiara la posición del pistolero para que encarase a Apama y que le enviara un archivo en formato PSD con los elementos de la composición en capas individuales para que él pudiera reorganizarlos y redimensionarlos.

Fourth (and definitive) pencil sketch. Ted asked me to change the position of the gunman so that he'd face Apama and to send to him a file in PSD format with the elements of the composition in individual layers so that he could reorganize and resize them.

Siete cosas interesantes sobre mi (esto va a ser difícil):

1- Mis primeros comics los dibujé a la tierna edad de 10-11 años. La profesora de Historia del colegio al final de la clase nos encargaba hacer un comic con el tema que había explicado. Cuando le tocaba leer el mío se partía de risa con mis dibujos.
2- Me he roto una tibia, un metatarsiano y el dedo gordo del pie. Afortunadamente, no todo el mismo día.
3- Me levanto a las 6 de la mañana tres días por semana para nadar 2000 metros.
4- Toda la vida intentando hacer que me guste el queso y cuando por fin lo consigo me entero de que es malo para el colesterol.
5- Prefiero a Bruce Lee frente a Chuck Norris; a John Buscema frente a Barry Smith, a John Wayne frente a Russell Crowe y a Susan Hayward frente a Marilyn Monroe.
6- Considero a la gaita irlandesa como el más fascinante y emotivo de los instrumentos.
7- Tengo la lágrima fácil cuando escucho determinada música o veo ciertas películas, pero sólo he llorado una vez leyendo un libro: el final de "La Ruta de la Seda", de Colin Falconer.

Seven interesting things about myself (now, this is not going to be easy):

1- I drew my first comics at the tender age of 10-11 years. My History teacher at the end of the class was entrusting us to do a comic about the lesson she just had explained. When she was reading mine she used to lough out loud with my drawings
2- I have broken a shinbone, a metatarsal and the big toe. Fortunately, not in the same day.
3- I get up at 6 a.m. three days per week in order to swim 2000 meters.
4- All my life I have been trying to get to like cheese and when finally I success I find out that it produces cholesterol.
5- I prefer Bruce Lee opposite to Chuck Norris; John Buscema opposite to Barry Smith, John Wayne opposite to Russell Crowe and Susan Hayward opposite to Marilyn Monroe.
6- I consider the Irish bagpipes as the most fascinating and most emotive of instruments.
7- I have an easy tear when I listen to certain music or see certain movies, but only I have cried once reading a book: the end of "The Silk Route", by Colin Falconer.

Encontré de manera casual la obra de este maravilloso artista polaco del XIX mientras buscaba en la red referencias sobre cosacos para un comic que algún día habré de dibujar.
Salvando las distancias, sobre todo geográficas, podría compararse a este pintor con los norteamericanos Frederic Remington o Charles Russell, tanto en su técnica pictórica heredera del impresionismo como sobre todo en su temática. Y es que, llámense cosacos o tártaros, indios o vaqueros, la visión romántica de esos indómitos jinetes en inexplorados espacios abiertos (sea la pradera norteamericana o la estepa euroasiática) nos retrotrae a un tiempo pasado en el que la aventura y el riesgo constituían la esencia de la cotidianeidad de la vida en la frontera.
Hay que agradecer a otro notable artista polaco, Juliusz Kossak, el que persuadiera al joven Józef Brandt para que abandonara sus estudios de ingeniería y se dedicase a la pintura. Haced click en las imágenes para agrandarlas y disfrutar del talento natural de este gran maestro.

I found the work of this wonderful Polish artist of the XIXth while looking in the net for references on Cossacks for a comic that some day I will have to draw.
Saving the distances, especially geographical, this painter might be compared with the North Americans Frederic Remington or Charles Russell, so much in his technique inherited from the Impressionism as especially in his subject-matter. And the fact is that, whether they are called Cossacks or Tartars, Indians or Cowboys, the romantic vision of these indomitable riders in unexplored open spaces (be it the North American prairie or the Eurasian steppe) carries us back to a past time in which adventure and peril were constituting the essence of everyday life in the border.
It is necessary to be grateful to another notable Polish artist, Juliusz Kossak, who persuaded the young Józef Brandt to leave his engineering studies and to devote himself to painting. Click in the images to enlarge them and enjoy the natural talent of this great master.

En principio se trataba de una prueba solicitada para ver cómo me desenvolvía retratando a los dos principales personajes de la serie y su entorno urbano, la ciudad de Cleveland. Una vez realizada y a la vista del resulado se pensó que perfectamente podría servir como portada del primer número.

Supongo que el hecho de que un cliente que acaba de recibir una ilustración encargue inmediatamente una nueva es una buena señal. Es lo que ha pasado cuando el cliente que encargó la ilustración de GI JOE recibió el original en su casa. Inmediatamente encargó una nueva ilustración, esta vez una escena en la que aparecieran ULTRON y 3 Vengadores: Iron Man, Ojo de Halcón y el Capitán América. He aquí el resultado de la ilustración a lápiz. Pronto, el dibujo terminado a tinta.

I suppose that the fact that a client orders a new commission immediately after receiving a first one is a good sign. That's what happened when the client that order the GI JOE commission received the original illustration at his house. He immediately ordered a new commission. This time it had to depict ULTRON and 3 Avengers: Iron Man, Hawk Eye and Captain America. Here is the penciled illustration. Soon, the finished inked piece.

Nos estamos perdiendo algo.

Iván Yákovlevich Bilibin fue uno de los ilustradores más fascinantes y dotados de finales del XIX y primera mitad del siglo XX. Si hubiera nacido en Japón o en Canadá sería tan famoso y conocido entre nosotros como lo son artistas tan renombrados como Harold Foster o Katsuhiro Otomo. Pero este hombre nació en Rusia y, por alguna razón, el arte pictórico-gráfico ruso es un desconocido en nuestro impermeable mundo occidental. Y eso que nos estamos perdiendo.

La primera vez que me topé con una obra de este maravilloso artista fue desde la portada de un famoso bestseller. El diseño preciosista con reminiscencias ornamentales del Art Nouveau, el tema que aunaba lo fantástico y lo épico, y un colorido sencillo, sin complicadas texturas y desvanecimientos pero absolutamente eficaz me atraparon irremisiblemente. Imposible no quedar cautivado por una obra así, un arte elaborado pero limpio, sereno pero expresivo, escenas de batalla y muerte llenas de vida y color y el paisaje y la cotidianeidad del campesinado retratando el modo de vida de una región ignorada y una época ya pasada.
Pasó bastante tiempo hasta que pude averiguar el nombre del autor de esa ilustración pero a partir de ahí fue mucho más fácil encontrar otras obras, cada una más bella que la anterior, con temas del folklore ruso, cuentos populares con guerreros poderosos, hermosas muchachas, seres mágicos, lugares exóticos, paisajes de naturaleza desbordante y arquitectura de cuento de hadas.

La obra de Bilibin sorprende por la majestuosidad de su belleza, por la riqueza y atractivo de contenidos y la dedicación y el talento que destila. Un autor al que urge reconocer el mérito de su valiosa aportación al mundo del arte.

We are losing something.

Iván Yákovlevich Bilibin was one of the most fascinating and gifted illustrators from the end of XIX and the first half of XX century. Were he born in Japan or Canada he'd be as celebrated and acknowledged as such renowned artists as Harold Foster or Katsuhiro Otomo. But this man was born in Russia and for some reason Russian pictorical-graphic art is unknown to our impermeable Occidental world. An that's our loss.

The first time I came acroos with a work by this wonderful artist was from the cover of a well-known bestseller book. I got caught by the detailed design with ornamental reminiscences from Art Nouveau, the theme adding fantasy and epic and an easy coloring without complicated textures or vanishings but totally eficcient. It was impossible not to be captivated but such a work, an ellaborate but clean art, serene but expressive, scenes filled with battle and death but full of color and life, the landscape and daily going of the peasants from an ignored region and a gone age.

It had to pass some time before I learnt the name of the artist and from there on it was much easier to find other pieces, each one more beautiful than its preceding, dealing with Russian folklore, popular tales with mighty warriors, fair maidens, magic beings, exotic places, nature brimming landscapes and fairy-tales architecture.

Bilibin's work amazes for its majestic beauty, the richness and appeal of themes, and the distilled dedication and talent. An artist that urgently deserves the merit of his valuable contribution to the world of art.

APAMA The Undiscovered Animal

Este es un pequeño avance del comic que estoy dibujando ahora mismo y que va a tenerme ocupado y entretenido durante bastante tiempo. Se trata de bocetos de las 3 primeras páginas de un comic de 25 páginas más portadas llamado APAMA THE UNDISCOVERED ANIMAL. El primero de lo que se espera sea una larga serie.
Parece que, de alguna manera, la historia se repite. En la última novela del escritor de best-sellers Joseph Finder: VANISHED, uno de los personajes principales es un joven que dibuja un comic sobre un héroe llamado The Cowl, al cual dota del físico y muchas de las características de su tío, Nick Heller (el protagonista de la novela). Joe Finder, a través de mi agente Joaquín García se puso en contacto conmigo para proponerme dibujar un comic de 8 páginas, escrito por Brian Azzarello, que supuestamente sería el comic que está dibujando el personaje de su novela. Tal como yo lo veo, eso me hace a mi, en cierto modo ¡ser uno de los personajes retratados en la novela!
En esta ocasión, en lugar de una novela estamos hablando de una película dirigida por Ted Sikora que lleva por título HERO TOMORROW. En la película, David, el personaje principal es un joven que se dedica a cortar hierba por las mañanas y a fumársela por las noches mientras dibuja un comic de un personaje llamado Apama the Undiscovered Animal. La idea de Ted Sikora, es publicar una serie que sería el comic que supuestamente está dibujando el protagonista de la película. Así que, de nuevo, me siento en parte protagonista de la película.

This is a small teaser preview of the comic that I'm drawing right now and that will keep me busy for quite a long time. They are pencil skteches for the first 3 pages of a 25 pages + cover comic called APAMA THE UNDISCOVERED ANIMAL. The first of a hopefully long series.
It seems that somehow history is repeated. In last novel by best-seller writer Joseph Finder: VANISHED, one of the main character is a young man who is drawing a comic upon ahero named The Cowl, who is based in his uncle Nick Heller (the novel's main character). Joe Finder, through mu agent Joaquín García contacted me to draw a 8 page comic written by Brian Azarello that is supposedly the comic that the character in the novel is drawing. As I see it, in some way that makes me one of the characters portrayed in the novel!
Now, instead of a novel we are talking about a film directed by Ted Sikora entitled HERO TOMORROW. In the movie, David, the main character, is a struggling comic book creator from Cleveland who spends his days cutting grass and his nights smoking it while drawing a comic about a character called Apama the Undiscovered Animal. Ted Sikora's idea is to publish a series that would be the comic that supposedly is making the main character of the film. So, again, I feel in part as if I had participated in the film.

Este ha sido realmente mi segundo intento de hacer algo que no sé muy bien cómo llamar: ¿comic audiovisual? Y tengo que decir que ha sido algo verdaderamente divertido de hacer, sobre todo la parte del sonido. Al principio había pensado en añadir voces, tal como mi amigo Rafa hace tan maravillosamente bien pero como realmente me da la sensación de que los diálogos tampoco aclaran demasiado la historia al final me pareció más interesante y sugerente utilizar sólo música y efectos de sonido.

This has been actually my second attempt at making something that I don't know exactly what to call: audiovisual comic? And I must say that it has been really a lot of fun, especially the soundtrack part. I'd thought at first to add some voices just as my friend Rafa does so brilliantly well but as in fact I think that the dialogues here are a bit confusing i thought it was more interesting and suggestive to just use music and sound effects.

Primer boceto realizado a lápiz en papel tamaño A4 para una ilustración para el fan-fiction Action Tales. Se trata de una portada para el relanzamiento durante el presente año 2010 de la línea de Star Trek.
Estas son las instrucciones de Miguel Ángel Naharro (alias Doc Banner):
"… se ve a Nero (el villano del ultimo film de Star Trek, no se si la viste) con su arma en el cuello de un anciano Spock. Nero tiene rostro furioso. Nero esta detrás de Spock y la cuchilla de su arma esta en el cuello del vulcaniano…"

First pencil sketch made in A4 size paper for a new illustration for the fan-fiction Action Tales. It will be used as a cover for this year's relaunching of their Star Trek line.
Here are the instructions given by Miguel Ángel Naharro (alias Doc Banner):
"… we see Nero (Star Trek's last film villain, did you see it?) with his weapon at an elderly Spock's neck. Nero wears a fierce face. Nero is behind Spock and his weapon's blade is in the Vulcan's throat…"

Segundo boceto. Esta vez trabajado digitalmente a partir del primer boceto usando una tableta wacom. Se corrigen algunos errores y se añaden detalles como el tatuaje en la frente de Nero y, sobre todo, las manos de Spock que en el primer boceto se daba a entender las tenía detrás de la espalda.

Second sketch. This time made digitally working from a scan of the previous one using a wacom tablet to fix symmetric mistakes and add details like Nero's forehead tattoo and, most important, Spock's hands which in the first sketch were supposed to be behind his back.

Dibujo a lapiz en papel tamaño A3. Hay algunos detalles que no terminan de convencerme. El rostro de Nero está bien dibujado y es proporcionalmente correcto pero le falta intensidad en la expresión. Tampoco me convence mucho la cara de Spock, podría estar mejor dibujada. Y sus manos… quizá debería probar otra postura.

Pencil drawing on A3 size paper. Some parts I don't like too much. Nero's face is well drawn and proportioned but it's not very expressive. I have also a problem with Spock's face, it could be better drawn. And about his hands… maybe I should try another pose.

Estudio de cabezas y manos. Lápiz sobre papel. Creo que se ha avanzado bastante aunque el rostro de Nero habrá que trabajarlo más, pero esa será retocándolo con la tableta gráfica.

Heads and hands studies. Pencil on paper. I think some progression has been made although Nero's face has to be more worked, but that will be with the help of the graphic tablet.

Segundo (y definitivo) dibujo a lápiz retocado digitalmente y listo para pasar al ser entintado mediante la mesa de luz. Se han escaneado las cabezas y manos del estudio anterior y se han recortado y pegado en Photoshop para sustituir las que había. En cuanto a la cara de Nero, se han aprovechado partes del dibujo anterior y se han utilizado otras del estudio que hemos hecho. Se han añadido dibujadas con la wacom partes de la vestimenta de Nero que antes no veíamos. Ahora tiene una apariencia más voluminosa.

Second (and final) pencil drawing digitally retouched and ready to ink through the light-table. The heads and hands from the previous study have been scanned and pasted in Photoshop to replace the former ones. Concernig Nero's face some parts are from the previous drawing, some from the scanned study. I have added parts of Nero's clothes that wasn't shown before. Now he has a more voluminous appearance.

Primera fase del entintado. Dibujo de línea a plumilla en papel tamaño A3 utilizando una mesa de luz. Decido de momento dejar el fondo sin entintar. Quizá lo haga más tarde o lo deje definitivamente para el momento del coloreado

Inking, first stage. Line-art with a nib pen on A3 size paper using a light-table. I decide to leave the background blank for the moment. Maybe I'd ink it later, maybe I'd work the whole background in the coloring stage.

Segunda (y definitiva) fase del entintado. Se utilizó un pincel para rellenar los negros, añadir texturas y terminar el dibujo en blanco y negro.

Inking, second (and final) stage. A brush was used to fill in the blacks, add some texture and finish the black&white drawing.

Primera fase del coloreado. En Photoshop se definen las distintas áreas de color y se rellenan con colores planos. Se colorean también las zonas del dibujo a blanco y negro que no son negros puros.

Coloring, first stage. The different color areas are defined and filled in with plain colors. The parts of the black&white drawing that are not pure blacks are also colored.

Segunda (y definitiva) fase del coloreado. Se añaden valores de luz y sombra, texturas, se definen los colores y se modifican (apenas ligeramente) ciertas partes del dibujo. Se añade el fondo, algunos efectos de iluminación y se da por finalizada la ilustración. Podría seguir retocando pequeños fallos que voy viendo cada vez que analizo la ilustración pero hay que saber parar a tiempo. Creo que no ha quedado mal del todo.

Coloring, second (and final) stage. Light and darkness values and textures are added. The colors are defined and some parts of the drawing (just a few) are modified. The background and some light effects are added and the illustration is completed. I could go on and on amending little things that I continue to spot any time I analyze the illustration but you have to know when to stop. I think it hasn't turned out too bad.

Tenía que pasar. Tarde o temprano. Y ha sido ahora. Sabía que la mordedura del blog estaba cargada de veneno y que la exposición continuada acabaría surtiendo su efecto. Al final no me he podido resistir y he tenido que crear mi propio blog. Aprovecharé para dar rienda suelta de manera periódica a mi digitorrea (creía que acababa de crear una ingeniosa palabra pero acabo de buscar en google y veo que se usa bastante y aparentemente con el mismo significado que yo pretendía darle), pero sobre todo para publicar muestras de mis trabajos, de mi proceso creativo, de los artistas que me interesan… y de paso expresar mis ideas impunemente.

It had to happen. Sooner or later. And it's been just now. I knew that the blog-bite was full of venom and that a continued exposition would at last have his goal. Finally I couldn't resist and I've had to create my own blog. This will be a place where periodically I'll be showing my works, my creative process, samples of the artists that I admire… and express my own ideas.
